About the Ropey Ladder

How it works - simple and effective

Ropey Ladder sports ladders are simple, traditional sports ladders - no ratings systems or complicated ranking.  You challenge a player above you on the ladder, and if you beat them, you move above them - it's as simple as that!

No more paper...

The Ropey Ladder replaces the scraps of card and paper on the club, leisure centre, or school walls.  What's more, the Ropey Ladder can be viewed from work or home, and you can set your challenges without visiting the venue - if anything, this why paper based ladders often fail.

In fact, we don't know how sports ladders could possibly work without the Ropey Ladder!

Fun, Enjoyment and Participation

That's our aim. We want people all over the world to be taking part in sport, and enjoying it.  Being a member of a sports ladder helps you do this in many ways: it adds incentive to play; it brings players together; and brings meaning to your matches.

But sports ladders shouldn't be taken too seriously - we hope that you'll keep Ropey Ladder matches friendly and sociable, in the spirit of fun and good-natured competition as it was first intended.  Please...

The Ropey Ladder's origins

The original Ropey Ladder was a squash ladder, set up in Oxford, UK in 2002 using an Excel spreadsheet.  Its owner, Dave Fletcher, soon got tired of running the ladder, and in the absence of any online traditional sports ladders, he set up his own.  The ladder grew quickly to 40 players and, a year later, over 300 games had been played on it.

Inspired by how well this simple concept had worked, Dave rewrote the Ropey Ladder so that anyone, anywhere in the world, could start their own sports ladder in a whole range of sports.  It was relaunched in 2004 as the web site you see today.

We hope that you enjoy using the Ropey Ladder, and that if you do, you'll spread the word.
